Know when hydraulic fluid cleanliness moves beyond its target.
Solid particle contamination can damage hydraulic pumps, valves, and other precision components. Fluid that looks acceptable may still exceed the cleanliness target for sensitive equipment. Periodic sampling provides valuable information, but conditions can change between checks. Maintenance teams need timely visibility into contamination trends so they can investigate and take action before problems escalate.
The UptimeIQ solution
UptimeIQ uses the HYDAC CS1520-1-1/000 contamination sensor to monitor solid particle cleanliness in compatible hydraulic fluid. Its output is connected through a suitable interface and gateway to UptimeIQ Cloud. Custom dashboards show ISO cleanliness readings and trends for each monitored asset. Thresholds are set to suit the machine and component manufacturers’ recommendations, with alerts when configured limits are exceeded. The team can then investigate contamination sources, check filtration, and review whether corrective action has restored cleanliness.
From an ISO reading to a maintenance response.
- Measure particle cleanliness. The CS1520 monitors the fluid at a suitable sampling point. Measurement quality depends on compatible fluid, suitable flow, and correct installation.
- Follow the trend in UptimeIQ Cloud. Review the readings for each monitored asset and see changes over time.
- Set the right target. Use the cleanliness recommendations for the machine and its most sensitive components. There is no single target that suits every hydraulic system.
- Respond to the alert. Investigate the cause, review filtration and fluid handling, and use follow-up readings to check the response.
What does an ISO cleanliness code tell you?
An ISO 4406 code summarizes particle contamination by size category. For the commonly used three-number format, the categories relate to particles at least 4, 6, and 14 micrometers in size. Higher code numbers indicate higher particle concentrations. UptimeIQ uses the configured cleanliness limits to bring an out-of-target reading to your team’s attention.
Protect critical equipment
Bring visibility to hydraulic systems serving presses, injection molding machines, power units, and other production equipment with compatible fluid and sampling conditions.
Check the corrective action
Compare readings before and after filtration service or other maintenance to see whether particle cleanliness has returned to its target range.
This application monitors solid particle cleanliness. Water contamination, viscosity, and chemical oil degradation require additional measurements or laboratory analysis. An alert calls for investigation; it does not automatically mean that an oil change is required.

What the application delivers
- Earlier visibility into increasing particle contamination
- Alerts when configured ISO cleanliness limits are exceeded
- A shared cloud view of hydraulic fluid cleanliness trends
- Better information for filtration checks and maintenance planning
Start with a critical hydraulic system and its recommended cleanliness target. UptimeIQ can help connect sensor readings, configure alerts, and give your maintenance team a clearer basis for action.
